“If I never get to see the Northern Lights”. . .
Ignorance is bliss. I wish I could live there sometimes. Social media has brought the world to me but it frustrates & saddens me when I see something or somewhere spectacular and I can’t participate. My friend Chris Burkard is flying over the newly erupted volcano in Iceland & I am beyond green with envy. The Aurora forecast over Norway is one of the biggest my friend has ever seen & he lives there. Seeing the hikers in the snowy PNW has me aching for a solid hiking partner.
Then I remembered. My second night in Iceland when the sky entertained me with the most epic light show I have ever witnessed.
You must hold these moments precious in the depths of your soul…
Huge solar storms are creating an explosion of rare Aurora Borealis sightings. Longing (nae, ACHING) for Auroras this past week made me go back to revisit some of my images I was fortunate to capture.
Describing the experience is always difficult for me. Spiritual in nature, (apropos words!) it felt almost as though angels were dancing above me.
One of nature’s coolest science experiments in action, molecules full of energy collide. It only stands to reason that you are swept up in that energy field. Sometimes we are privy to witness something many will never see in their lifetime.
Sitting my butt in the chair in front of the computer, I relived that experience. It was overwhelming from the standpoint of an inexperienced Northern Lights shooter but the physical reaction my body had, created a spiritual awakening. To this day, it is difficult to really put into words. (And for one that is rarely lacking for something to say, that’s saying something!). To look into a Corona bursting right above your head is a once in a lifetime event. This series shows how ever-changing & fast moving the Borealis can be, which when you are trying to capture it all at long exposures, can be maddening in the moment. Some burst so bright, you don’t have time to change your camera settings. Even the blurry ones, (unbeknownst to me I bumped the lens) still are abstract works of nature’s art. I can’t wait to go back.
Loved bumping into you on Isle Royale! Still need to swap pictures.. 🦊
Dude!! The master fisherman that gave me my finest meal in the backcountry! No foxes. I tried hard, but none. Reach out to me. I have to tell you my about my harrowing night solo canoeing BWCA.
